5 Questions for Beacon Providers, Answered

Last week, TechCrunch – via inMarket’s Mark DiPaola – suggested 5 important questions retailers should pose to beacon providers “before [they] beacon.” Because, as he writes, “there have been plenty of exciting announcements touting beacons in 2014, and enormous interest in the field,” we thought we’d use this opportunity at Footmarks to allay any “confusion about how to use these devices at scale.” So – here’s those 5 questions for beacon providers, answered by Footmarks – an end-to-end platform, boasting secure and reliable patent-pending hardware and an innovative and intuitive experience platform. 1. Which apps do these beacons work with, and how many people use those apps? Footmarks’ SDK gets built into our clients’ existing apps to bring location intelligence to the client-end user relationship and enhance the app’s utility for both client and end user. As DiPaola correctly points out, the larger the app network in place, the greater…

Google’s Making a Masterful Play for Amazon’s Customers (And Saving Brick & Mortar Retail?)

In New York, San Francisco, or LA? Then you’ve probably heard about Google’s same-day delivery service Shopping Express, which rolled out in Manhattan early last week. Google is forgoing the delivery surcharge for the next six months, and New Yorkers who signed up for the service before midnight last Monday also received a $10 spending bonus. So far, participating stores in Manhattan include Costco, Walgreens, Target, and Fairway Market, which for many, could easily kill a week’s worth of errands. There’s apps for both iOS and Android, or users can dial up the service at Google.com/shopping/express, to place an order before 4.30pm. So far, reviews have been positive (as per a casual survey of Twitter), and demand for the service has been brisk. So brisk, in fact, that Google was forced to shut down deliveries by noon on its first day. Further reports indicated Tuesday was rocky for the company…

“Smart Lighting” vs. Beacons: Footmarks Dives Into The Debate

When it comes to the development of micro-location solutions, there have been no shortage of technologies around which developers have rallied. From old-school GPS and NFC, to Bluetooth Low Energy and the rise of scalably deployable beacons, the question is not if we’ll successfully deliver contextual digital content and analytics to physical spaces, but how. Philips grabbed headlines early last week, with its announcement of an “intelligent LED in-store lighting” system the company is piloting at a retailer in Düsseldorf. The lighting unit uses visual light communication (VLC) to enable LED fixtures to relay location and product information to smartphones via a companion app (much in the way beacons use BLE). Philips has yet to reveal what technology it’s using for communication, or what devices are compatible, but coverage in the Verge for one, considers lighting and beacon technology a “surprisingly logical” pairing (albeit while questioning its cost effectiveness). Doug Thompson, over…
